Losing Inches the Right Way

Do you want to lose inches and keep them off forever? Millions of Americans, adults and children, have been trapped into an unruly world of obesity or excessive pudginess. By doing things the old fashioned way or the right way, you may in fact be able to break free from this trap.

Obesity or simply an overweight problem occurs when energy intake is more than energy expenditure (i.e. sedentary lifestyle). This lifestyle can lead to all types of illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, hyperlipidemia, high blood cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, etc.

There are a number of factors that lead to obesity. One is a genetic predisposition and another is influenced by the environment. Endocrine disorders such as the Prader Willi syndrome are genetic in cause and bring about childhood obesity and mental retardation. Hypothyroidism may result in moderate obesity (but the excess fat is not of adipose tissue). Both of these disorders may stem from environmental irregularities or chromosomal defects. Castration or ovarian failure, along with other ailments not mentioned, may also lead to moderate obesity. The main factor is consuming more calories than the body needs for survival. However, this over-consumption may be genetic in nature since children of obese parents are ten times more likely to become obese that other children.

How can we prevent obesity? We can start from infancy. Breastfeed your baby if you can. That is, breast feed if you do not have medical conditions that prevent you from breastfeeding such as HIV/AIDS or if you are taking medication contraindicated to breastfeeding. Studies show that breastfed babies are less likely to become obese later in their adult life. Pay attention to your child. Look for signs of fullness as when he or she closes his or her lips, turns the head away, or starts playing with the food. Never force your child to eat nor to clear the plate. Your child is the best judge on how much he can eat. Do give him regular, healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. Never reward him with food, instead take him out to the park or to the movies.

How can you lose inches the right way? Eat a balanced diet with three regular, healthy and nutritious meals comprised of lean protein (beans, turkey, chicken, fish), whole grain breads and cereals, rice, pasta, fruits and vegetables, low fat/nonfat dairy and fats and sweets in moderation. Remember to cook low fat by broiling, grilling, steaming or boiling. Use cooking spray instead of oil or butter.

Consistent cardiovascular exercise of 20 to 30 minutes per day three or more times per week will help you feel good and at the same time help you lose inches. It may take time for you to lose inches but be patient because this is not a quick scheme where you lose the weight quickly and gain it back even quicker. A rapid loss of weight is mostly a result of water loss and is expected in the beginning. followed by a steady, slow weight loss, which will likely consist of fat.

The best way to tell if you have lost inches is to try on your clothes to see how they fit instead of getting on the scale. The bottom line is, do the dieting the right way, the old fashioned way.
